When Jake Owen spontaneously proposed to his girlfriend, Lacey Buchanan, during a concert in his hometown of Vero Beach, Fla., earlier this month, he had to pop the question without a ring. Thankfully, he wasted no time in heading to the jeweler, and his new fiancée now boasts a big diamond on her ring finger.
"I told her, 'The sparkle is never going to go away in that ring, and I don't want our sparkle to ever go away either,'" he tells People magazine. "On your darkest days, I want you to look at it and see that there's a glimmer of light in it. I want it to always remind you of the possibilities of our relationship."
The "Alone With You" singer designed the 2.5 carat ring with Lizzy Raye Jewelers in Atlanta. The diamond is oval-cut and set in platinum with small diamonds on the band. "I want that ring to be timeless," he explains. "When my mom saw it, she said, 'That looks like something Princess Diana would wear.' I was so excited to give it to her."
The 30-year-old admits asking for Lacey's hand in marriage that night was a spur of the moment decision, but the happy couple had been talking about tying the knot, and Jake had even asked for her father's permission. Instead of setting up an elaborate proposal, though, the tunesmith says he knew when the moment was right.
"I only had one song left to play and it was 'Don't Think I Can't Love You,'" he recounts. "I wrote it a long time ago about my family, and my dad and mom had been married for 30 years. I just saw [Lacey] out there, my family, and I was like, forget the ring, screw it, this is like the perfect place to do it."
Proposing in front of a room full of concert attendees did have one advantage. "Because I asked her on stage, I have videos so we'll always be able to relive that moment," he shares. "It seemed like it went by in an instant. I didn't even remember if she said yes to me or not, it happened so fast! She had no idea. It was pretty cool to watch that happen."
Jake will have to balance wedding planning with his summer tour schedule, which includes serving as opening act for Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw on their Brothers of the Sun tour.
